Afternoon Tea, a quintessential British food tradition, originated from Anna, the Duchess of Bedford in the early 1840s. At the time, it was common to have just two main meals a day, breakfast and dinner at around 8 o'clock in the evening. The Duchess would become hungry during the afternoon and started having a pot of tea with light snacks privately in her boudoir. After finding much delight in this activity, she invited friends to join her for an additional summer afternoon meal at her room in Belvoir Castle. The menu centered around small cakes, bread and butter sandwiches, assorted sweets, and, of course, tea. This practice of taking tea in the afternoon became fashionable among the elite upper class, quickly evolving into a beloved social event rather than a simple meal. This trend which was started by Duchess Anna eventually became one of Britain's most popular culinary traditions and a symbol of British culture that is still cherished today.
