A helm is a mechanical device, typically a wheel or tiller, designed to provide a means of steering a ship or boat. It is coupled with the rudder, a critical part of the vessel's steering mechanism, thereby controlling the direction in which the vessel moves. The helm allows the captain or helmsman to maneuver the vessel by turning it port (left) or starboard (right). The design, size, and complexity of the helm can vary widely depending on the vessel's size, type, and level of modernity, with technological advances now incorporating electronic systems for added precision and control. Regardless of its design, the helm performs a critical function in maritime navigation, contributing significantly to safe and effective seafaring.

Example

1. The ship captain moved swiftly to the helm, taking control to steer the vessel away from the looming storm. 2. The sailor was trained well to handle the helm during high winds, quickly adjusting the rudder to stay the course. 3. As the first mate fell ill, Jane took over the helm, her hands firm on the wheel, steering the ship through the rough waves. 4. When he wasn't busy at the helm, the captain taught his youngest crew member how to maneuver the rudder correctly. 5. The alteration was made too late, and despite the frantic turning of the helm, the ship hit the iceberg.

Interesting fact

Fun Fact: Did you know the helm of a ship, which is the device used for steering, has its own language and traditions? Steering commands follow a code in which directions are given according to the helm's position, rather than the ship’s actual desired direction. For instance, a command to turn "helm to port" would move the helm (and thus the rudder) to the right side, even though the actual vessel would move to the left. This might seem confusing to landlubbers, but seasoned sailors are well-versed in this unique jargon. So, when you hear commands "starboard" or "port" on a ship, they are referring to turning the helm right or left respectively. This maritime tradition has been inherited from the age of explorers and is maintained till this very day!
