Cost Intelligence
The listing price is rarely what you'll pay. Here's every cost layer — decoded with real numbers so you can budget confidently.
Quick question
What's your rough per-week budget for a yacht charter?
Charter Rate
The charter fee covers the use of the yacht — hull, engines, sails — for a fixed period. It does not include fuel, crew salaries (on some yachts), food, drinks, marina fees, or the skipper's expenses. These extras commonly add 20–40% on top of the base rate. Always clarify what 'all-inclusive' means before comparing prices.

Watch out
Always ask: 'Is this MYBA-standard? What is and isn't in the base rate?' before comparing listings side-by-side.
Hidden Fees
Fuel is the biggest shock for first-time charterers. A motor yacht cruising at speed burns 100–400 litres per hour. A week with heavy motoring can add €2,000–€8,000 to your bill. Marina berths range from €100 to €800+ per night in peak season. VAT applies in most EU waters — typically 10–25% depending on jurisdiction. Crew gratuity is customary at 10–15% of the charter fee. None of these appear in the listing price.

Pro tip
Request a full Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) estimate before signing. Ask the broker for an itemized projection based on your itinerary.
APA Explained
The Advance Provisioning Allowance is a prepaid fund — typically 30–35% of the charter fee — placed with the captain at the start of the trip. It covers all running costs: fuel, food, drinks, marina fees, port dues, and sundries. Any unused APA is returned at the end of the charter. If it runs short, you top it up. It is not a hidden fee — but first-timers are often surprised by how quickly it depletes when motoring heavily or dining at expensive marinas.
Watch out
Never charter without getting a projected APA estimate from your broker in writing. Unbudgeted APA overrun is the number-one complaint from first-time charterers.
Quick question
Have you factored in costs beyond the charter fee?
Value Assessment
When split across a group of 8–10 people, a luxury yacht charter frequently costs less per person than a comparable five-star resort holiday. The difference: no crowds, no fixed schedule, full privacy, your own private anchorages, and 24-hour crew. For group celebrations or milestone trips, the per-person math often surprises people.
~€1,500/wk
Per person (10 pax, €15k yacht)
€2k–€4k/wk
5-star resort equivalent
Pro tip
Always calculate the per-person cost when presenting a charter to a skeptical group. The number changes the conversation immediately.
Pricing Strategy
Book early (6–9 months ahead) for peak Mediterranean season in July and August. Or book last-minute (4–8 weeks out) for discounts up to 40% on unsold inventory. Shoulder season — May–June and September–October — offers the identical yacht at 20–35% less, with calmer seas, fewer crowds, and arguably better cruising conditions. Use a licensed broker: they access wholesale rates and negotiated discounts unavailable to direct enquiries.
Pro tip
Shoulder season (May–June or Sept–Oct) is the professional charter community's open secret. Same yacht, 25% less, with empty anchorages and calmer water.
