Can a Yacht Handle Your Group or Private Event?

The right setup makes a group charter effortless. The wrong one creates friction. Here is how to plan it correctly.

Capacity

How Many People Can a Charter Yacht Actually Hold?

Overnight capacity and day-trip capacity are different things. A 25m motor yacht that sleeps 8 guests overnight can safely carry 12–14 for a day trip (no sleeping required). Charter regulations typically limit overnight guests to the number of cabins — usually 6–12 depending on yacht size. Day-only events can push numbers higher but require the owner's explicit approval and may require additional life-saving equipment. Always confirm both overnight and day capacity before selling the experience to your group.

Celebrations

Birthday and Milestone Celebrations on a Yacht

Milestone birthday charters (40th, 50th, 60th) are one of the most popular charter categories. A good charter company can coordinate: personalized decoration, a celebration cake prepared by the yacht chef, a champagne plan for arrival and sunset, a themed dinner, and logistical coordination for guests arriving from different locations. The most important planning detail: communicate the celebration to the charter company (and thus the captain and chef) well in advance — not on boarding day.

Pro tip

Book the charter 4–6 months in advance for a milestone celebration. Prime July–August dates sell out by January.

Corporate Charters

Corporate Yacht Events — What Actually Works at Sea

Corporate charters serve two distinct functions: executive retreat (5–8 senior people, full week, high privacy) and client entertainment (half-day or full-day event, 10–20 people, show-and-wow). Both require a different brief to the charter company. For executive retreats, the emphasis is on privacy, satellite connectivity for working sessions, and high-quality cuisine. For client events, the emphasis is on spectacle, service quality, and logistics for guests boarding from multiple locations.

Weddings at Sea

Yacht Weddings — What Is and Isn't Possible

A small yacht wedding (8–20 guests) is logistically feasible with the right planning. Legal ceremonies at sea require specific documentation and registration depending on the flag state and the home country of the couple — consult a maritime legal specialist or a wedding planner with yacht experience. What is always possible: a celebration event, ceremony under sail, themed dinner, and professional photography. What requires careful planning: legal documentation, guest transportation to and from the yacht, and weather contingency.

Watch out

Do not assume a 'yacht wedding' is legally recognized in your home country without verifying the legal requirements for maritime ceremonies. The ceremony at sea may need to be preceded by a civil registration onshore.
